Sigh No More

I had listened to a clip of this song on itunes a while back when I first discovered Mumford and Sons, but I wasn't blown away by the clip so I never downloaded it. However, while I was at Starbucks yesterday morning this song came on and after hearing the whole thing I decided I liked it a lot after all. I looked up the lyrics when I got back to work and they hit me right in the heart, so I purchased the song on Amazon yesterday afternoon. Here are the beautiful words (emphasis added to portions that particularly resonate with me right now)... And here's a link if you'd like to listen along.

Serve God, love me and mend
This is not the end
Lived unbruised, we are friends
I'm sorry

Sigh no more, no more
One foot in sea and one on shore
My heart was never pure
You know me

But man is a giddy thing
Oh man is a giddy thing

Love it will not betray you
Dismay or enslave you, it will set you free
Be more like the man you were made to be
There is a design, an alignment, a cry
Of my heart to see,
The beauty of love as it was made to be

I haven't heard this song, but whoever wrote it is borrowing pretty heavily from Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." I'll have to look it up and listen to it... :o) Yay for a modern songwriter even knowing who Shakespeare is!

I hate to let you down but I myself am not very familiar with Shakespeare at all; however I did read that there was quite a Shakespearean presence in this song! I think you would actually love Mumford & Sons... They have a really folksy sound. Apparently the father of one of the band members is the pastor of a large church in the UK! Whatever Christian upbringing he's had is definitely reflected in a lot of their lyrics. Oddly (and disappointingly), they do drop the f-bomb in one of their songs... I chalk it up to cultural differences. At any rate, do check out "Sigh No More" as well as "The Cave," "Awake My Soul," and "Roll Away Your Stone." HIGHLY recommend each of these songs for both musical & lyrical quality! Enjoy!
