Thanksgiving All Year: 331-340

We have had some really beautiful weather in Reno this past week. Of course, we've also had some snow (that's Reno for ya!) but it's been refreshing to enjoy some sunshine, feel some warmth, and see some signs of the new growth that spring brings... It just makes you feel a little more hopeful about all of life, and considering the fact that I seem to know a lot of people who are going through really tough stuff right now, HOPE is a beautiful thing to be reminded of.

This week, I am thankful...

331. For family gatherings.

While Erin's sister Kara was in town
we gathered the families for an
early Easter celebration with
lots of great food and fun!

332. For new music.

333. For another installment of Jessie's and my bi-monthly-ish tradition of spending a Saturday afternoon having lunch at My Favorite Muffin, going for a walk downtown, and [sometimes] seeing a movie.

seeing "The Hunger Games"

334. For evidence of spring!

335. For Louie Giglio's powerful message of grace (which he defines as "God at work" because "the opposite of grace is 'ME at work'") in the Passion "Fruitcake and Ice Cream" DVD.

336. That our worship team did a wonderful job leading our church family in celebrating our risen Savior this past Sunday.

337. For moments in the sunshine with my family on Easter.

338. For my nephew's precious smile.

Is he NOT the cutest little guy
you've ever seen?!

339. That God uses the testing of our faith to produce endurance, and that He's giving me not only the grace to endure but also the desire to let endurance have its perfect result in my life.

340. For the reminder in a devotional Dana shared with me that, "God doesn’t waste time … He redeems it. The time of waiting will be used to prosper us in each season of life," -- and for the grace to choose to believe that.

Sunday afternoon I was messing around on Pinterest and came across an excellent reminder (and a timely one for Easter) that "a lot can happen in just three days." As I mentioned already, it seems like I know so many people right now who are going through really difficult times. Not all of them are life-or-death (though some of them are) but pain is pain, and I feel heavy-hearted for my friends who are facing trials right now regardless of the magnitude as we might perceive it. In light of that, I really am grateful for the reminder that we serve a God who is mighty to save and who truly can make what seems impossible become a reality -- even in as little as three days.

I hope this truth encourages you in whatever you may be facing today! Until next time...

Thanksgiving All Year: 321-330

Good evening, friends! Check it out, I am getting this week's list of thanks-giving posted in a somewhat timely fashion! Go, me! =)

This week I am thankful...

321. That I have the privilege of working with my brother, which means on any given day I can wander into his office and enjoy an impromptu, meaningful conversation about the Gospel and Gospel-centered living.

322. For the second meeting with our young adults fellowship group planning team. I'm always so encouraged by our time together!

323. That God rearranged my plans last Wednesday so that I ended up with the entire afternoon off and the house to myself, and that Eric had loaned me two books that very morning which led me to spend my free time reading a great book (Blue Like Jazz) -- in its entirety, in one sitting, for the first time in my entire life.

{source}

324. For the inspiration that came through my afternoon of reading to set aside a few hours each week for some quality time with a good book at a locally-owned coffee shop.

325. For having read a second wonderful book (A Million Miles in a Thousand Years) within five days of reading of Blue Like Jazz.

{source}

326. That God used Donald Miller's reflections on truly learning to receive God's grace to enhance a couple of conversations I had with friends over the weekend.

327. That I had a denim jacket in my car to put on after my nephew's diaper evidently malfunctioned at a school fundraiser on Friday night, hahahahaha!!!

Hey, if someone can
get away with this...

...it's definitely gonna be
this little guy!!! <3

328. For a couple of unexpected, pleasant encounters over the weekend.

329. For a fun time with my mom and her friend on Monday, going out for pizza and seeing "October Baby" (which is a great movie, by the way!).

{source}

330. For the realization that God is teaching me to keep my eyes on Him not only when things are not going the way I want them to and I am tempted toward discouragement or despair, but also when unexpected POSITIVE things happen and I am tempted to get carried away with excitement and lose my focus on Him. I think I'm moving closer to a thing called BALANCE, and that is an odd sensation for me, but it's one I for which I am most grateful!

Hope y'all are enjoying your week!! Until next time...

Random Fire {Episode 1: Pilot}

I've had quite a few ideas for blog posts tumbling around in my mind over the past few weeks, but for me to sit down and compose a really well-thought-out entry literally takes several hours' worth of thinking, writing, and editing. I don't often have several hours of free time staring me in the face, and when I do, blogging is not usually at the top of my list of things to do. Therefore, I tend to put it off, and, as you can see, that leads to weeks upon weeks of not posting anything other than my [sometimes weekly] lists of thanks-giving. So I'm trying something new. Rather than letting the pressure of developing one specific thought delay me indefinitely, I'm going to try compiling a few simplified thoughts ~ most likely of a random variety ~ more frequently.

And so I present to you the initial installment of Random Fire!

Shot 1 ~ The Proposal:

I never cease to be delighted by how incredibly well Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds play off of each other in The Proposal. I have seen this movie probably a dozen times, and I never grow tired of it.

Shot 2 ~ Facebook Fasting:

I didn't look at Facebook all day yesterday, and I found it INCREDIBLY refreshing. I don't consider myself a Facebook addict by any means, but for a while now I've been toying with the idea of intentionally setting aside a "Facebook-free" day each week and yet I haven't followed through with it until yesterday. After discovering how refreshing it was, I'm definitely going to make a point to become more disciplined with this ~ probably even more than once a week!

Shot 3 ~ Nail Polish:

I went to Target with Ashley yesterday and bought some new nail polish on a whim ~ two shades of blue and one of green. I painted my nails this afternoon for the first time in quite a while, but I also used all three new nail polishes on the same painting job. I'm pretty sure I've never used multiple colors at the same time before, and I KNOW I've never done anything creative like painting a flower on top of a solid color. But I have to say I am thoroughly enjoying the results. I decided this must be a creative alternative to some subconscious desire to decorate Easter eggs, haha!

Shot 4 ~ Reading, Part 1:

I've been hearing about the book Blue Like Jazz for YEARS, but I never had read it myself. However, a movie based on the book is coming out next week, and I recently decided I wanted to "try" to read the book before seeing the movie. Last Wednesday I had a morning meeting and lunch plans, which meant I was only going to be at work for about two hours, so I decided to just take the day off. My lunch plans ended up getting postponed, and a friend had just loaned me Blue Like Jazz as well as A Million Miles in a Thousand Years (another book by Donald Miller which was inspired by the process of putting Blue Like Jazz into movie form), so I decided to go home and start reading. For the first time in my life, I read an entire book in one sitting, and it was a BLISSFUL way to spend my afternoon off!

Shot 5 ~ Donald Miller:

Now, there were bits and pieces of Blue Like Jazz that I wasn't totally on board with, but considering I was wary of Donald Miller's work based on things I've heard over the past few years (none of which I can specifically remember), I was PLEASANTLY surprised by how Gospel-centric Blue Like Jazz actually is. I was challenged, inspired, and encouraged in my own faith in more ways than I can begin to describe here. Being that I consider Scripture to be the only absolutely reliable source of truth, I read EVERY other book with a grain of salt, regardless of who the author is, knowing there will probably be SOMETHING at some point that doesn't entirely jive with Scripture. And I would advise reading ANY book, including Blue Like Jazz, with discernment. But on the whole, I found this to be an EXCELLENT read. And while I'll continue to read his work with discernment, I no longer feel so skeptical of Miller's writing.

Shot 6 ~ Reading, Part 2:

In the process of reading Blue Like Jazz, I rediscovered the joy of getting lost in someone else's story by way of reading. It's been YEARS since I've spent much time reading, but I was so refreshed by my afternoon of reading Blue Like Jazz, I've decided to be intentional about carving out a few hours each week to spend some alone time with a book. Saturday afternoon I set aside a couple of hours and went to a locally-owned coffee shop and enjoyed a chai tea latte while I read from A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. It was lovely, energizing, and refreshing, and I am so excited to make this a regular part of my weekly schedule.

Shot 7 ~ Finding Balance:

I was talking with a friend this weekend about not knowing exactly what our futures hold and wondering if we are foolish to continue holding out hope for certain things. I ended up saying to my friend that ultimately it didn't matter whether the things we hope for are meant to be or not; all that matters is that we continue to seek the Lord wholeheartedly and walk with Him as He reveals His purpose for us day by day. I was considering this again during my time with the Lord this morning, and it struck me that I think I might be reaching a level of balance in my walk of faith that I've never experienced before. I tend to be easily distracted by both really difficult things AND really exciting things. I've definitely been learning, on a new level, to keep my eyes on the Lord in the midst of difficulty lately, but this morning I suddenly realized I was also learning to keep my eyes on Him in the midst of potentially distracting GOOD things that have happened recently. It was an odd but pleasant sensation to recognize I'd made even a small step toward living a more balanced life of faith, thanks to all that God has been teaching me lately.

Aaaaaaand I believe that's a wrap for now, folks! Thanks for tuning in... Episode 2 should hopefully be coming soon!

Thanksgiving All Year: 291-320

Oh my word. I seriously cannot believe how far behind I am on my blog. This. Is. Ridiculous. Whatevs, on with the show.

Over the past several weeks, in spite of my absence/laziness, I HAVE been thankful...

291. That I caught a sinus infection super early and was able to knock it almost completely out with antibiotics within a mere three days.

292. For a crazy-fast turnaround time getting in and out of the doctor's office the day after my sinus infection started.

293. For antibiotics.

294. For a Saturday with NO PLANS during which I made a little nest on the couch at Cassidy and Erin's (where I was house sitting) and just tried to get over that dreadful sinus infection.

295. For a safe and pretty drive over the hill with Jessie in snowy weather...

296. ...to see Gungor in concert...

297. ...and for the opportunity to meet up with Cassidy, Erin, and Caleb for dinner at Panera before the show!

298. For The Firm's "Power Half-Hour" workout DVD.

299. For Jessie's availability for a last-minute coffee date on a recent Sunday afternoon when I found myself in town with a couple of hours to kill.

300. For the rediscovery of Isaiah 57:10:
"You were tired out by the length of your road,
Yet you did not say, 'It is hopeless.'
You found renewed strength,
Therefore you did not faint.
301. That God gave me the grace to trust that He spoke through me as I shared about the gift of encouragement at our fellowship group last Tuesday, in spite of the fact that I am NOT a gifted speaker.

302. For the inspiration and ability to put together small gifts of encouragement for our fellowship group as a part of my sharing last week.

Each small box was filled with
50 encouraging quotes/Scriptures/lyrics.
I also made CDs featuring Gungor,
Mat Kearney, Mumford and Sons, and more.
303. For Colton Dixon's moving take on Billy Joel's "Piano Man" on American Idol last week...

304. ...and for the priceless comments he made after performing about asking God to use him and wanting HIM to shine through first and foremost.
{Ladies and gentlemen, I think it's safe to say I've chosen my pick for this season.}
I've posted the video of his performance below, but I'm very frustrated to see that they cut it off JUST before Ryan Seacrest came out and asked him the question that led to his comments about wanting God to use him... The footage was available on youtube last week but it's been removed. Boo!

305. That Hee Jun Han was not eliminated from American Idol last week despite being in the bottom three.
{Colton may be my pick to win, but I'm still loyal to Hee Jun as well!}

306. That I got my credit card payment in the day it was due after having completely spaced it.

307. For Trader Joe's dark chocolate mint espresso beans.

308. For Mat Kearney's "Young Love" and "City of Black and White" albums. I seem to love both albums even more with each listen.

Buy it here!

Buy it here!
309. That Jessie and I have the opportunity to see Mat Kearney in concert again next month. WOOT!

310. For this journal my mom gave me several months ago that I decided to use for recording memorable quotes...

311. ...and for the plethora of encouraging words already filling its pages (with a few humorous lines thrown in for good measure).

312. For rainbows.

{source}

313. For the opportunity to go for a walk in the sunshine after work last Friday.

314. For relaxing moments spent listening to Mat Kearney after that walk in the sunshine while I messed around on Pinterest and waited for Jessie to come over. It was one of those moments of just blissful contentment.

315. For an amazingly encouraging yogurt date with Alina on Saturday. INCREDIBLE how God puts people in our lives who can relate almost EXACTLY to things we are going through at different times.

316. For a "Jake hug" on Sunday from my friend who's in town from Oregon on spring break.

317. For an impromptu movie night with Ashley and Jake on Sunday.

being goofs after a
"Night at the Museum" double-header

318. For getting to hang out with Ashley three days in a row.

with Luke and Ash at
a surprise party for our friend Jon

319. That God has given me MULTIPLE friends who are always so gracious as to lend me an ear, especially when my brain and/or heart start gettin' a little flustered.

320. That I'm finally caught up on this blog. {For now.}

Here's to trying to stay on top of this thing a little better in the days ahead -- and perhaps, just maybe, even posting something besides my lists of thanks-giving again sometime soon!!

Thanksgiving All Year: 281-290

I think the most challenging part of posting this weekly list of thanks-giving (aside from doing it in a timely fashion, hehe) is trying to come up with some sort of introductory paragraph. Sometimes I have something to say, but other times, I've got nothin'. And today is one of those "other times." Is it bad to skip pleasantries and dive right in??

Today, I am thankful...

281. For an EXTREMELY encouraging meeting with the advisory(ish) team for our young adults fellowship group last Wednesday. I am SO excited about the vision for this group and cannot wait to see how God is going to work in and through us as we continue to seek Him in the weeks ahead!

282. That God is so gracious as to send words of encouragement to me through other people's posts on Facebook on days when I really need (and sometimes even ask for) an extra boost.

283. For weekly coffee dates with Jessie.

Jessie's creative photography
meets Instagram during one of
our coffee dates a few weeks back!

284. For a quiet and relaxing Friday evening to myself, featuring leftover Blind Onion pizza and new (to me) episodes of Arrested Development.

285. For a challenging but fun workout Saturday morning, using The Firm's "Total Body Time Crunch" -- the first workout DVD I ever purchased, and one I haven't used in a while but really enjoy!

286. For a BEAUTIFUL, warm Sunday afternoon...

287. ...and for friends with whom to enjoy it!

288. That the new Blind Onion, which is closer to home than any of the others, is finally open! (Two mentions of Blind Onion in one post... Perhaps I'm a little pizza-crazy right now!)

289. For God's faithfulness in demonstrating how He can and will answer prayers -- even without my help (gasp!) -- when I am trusting Him and being faithful to do what He's called me to do!

290. For plans for a day trip to California with Jessie this coming weekend to see Gungor in concert... Can't wait!!

Gungor opened for David Crowder
last fall and we fell in love!

 Happy March, y'all!!
